Matthew Alderton - Psychotherapist
MA, BSc, Dip, Dip Psych
I am a qualified counsellor, psychotherapist and EMDR practitioner. I support my clients through mental health difficulties with an integrative and holistic approach. I provide care through support but also self empowerment and meaningful interventions to provide long lasting change. I am caring, approachable and down to earth offering help based on the person I am helping. I work in Paddington London and Cuffley Hertfordshire.
MBSR
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction provides a way o meeting tinnitus in a relaxed non judgemental way. This enables a client to start to change the relationship they have with tinnitus.
Somatic therapy
Working with the body is an integral part of helping people with tinnitus and trauma. The body is as important as the mind in terms of helping with problematic tinnitus.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing Therapy is a way of helping with traumatic experiences which have caused tinnitus as well as the trauma caused by tinnitus.
Psychoeducation
Insight is often the first stage of recovering from something troubling like problematic tinnitus. Insight lets you know where you stand and what you can do to help yourself.
Sound therapy
Sound therapy can help clients to relax and regain control of their tinnitus. It can also play a role as part of a broader tinnitus retraining therapy approach.
Practical advice
It's not all about therapy. Much of your tinnitus recovery journey will be influenced by what you do outside of therapy. Knowing what to do and what not to do is important.
Tinnitus counselling
Tinnitus counselling involves speaking to and being heard by a therapist. It is helpful to speak with someone who has first hand experience of managing tinnitus and knows what therapeutic methods are helpful.
Psychotherapy
We always bring our history with us to therapy. Experiencing and healing from psychological difficulties sometimes needs a more in depth approach.
What is it like working with me?
I am personable and build trust with my clients in a down to earth way. The relationship we have is real and caring within the bounds of theraputic principles and practices. Working with me enables you to find a sense of safety and peace which you might not be in touch with outside of a therapeutic environment. Establishing trust and strong therapeutic bond is the only type of container where healing can begin. As a person centred therapist I will follow your lead in relation to understanding you and what you might need to heal. I might also work in a directive way in relation to tinnitus and trauma. We work together to establish your therapeutic needs and what the best way forward might be in relation to moving towards tinnitus habituation. You are always in control of a therapy session and we work at your pace. We work with whatever you bring or what comes up mid session. We work in collaboration together in a nurturing way. I might use a somatic or psychological intervention where appropriate.

Online
I like to work with my clients on a face to face basis as I think it makes for a stronger therapeutic bond. Unfortunately not everyone is able to get to London of Hertfordshire. Some of my clients are from different parts of the world. I try not to let location get in the way of the therapy I offer so I do see clients online if they are able to access a safe, quiet environment wherever they live. You will need a computer and a reasonable internet provider to access online therapy.
