Tinnitus Counselling Hertfordshire

Tinnitus Counselling is one of the first stages of problematic tinnitus recovery. Problematic tinnitus is characterised by someone having a negative cognitive and somatic response to a tinnitus trigger. Tinnitus recovery starts with learning how to manage tinnitus symptoms eventually leading to tinnitus habituation and cessation of tinnitus symptoms.

Tinnitus counselling helps you to feel supported in your tinnitus recovery, helps you to air your fears and frustrations and provides practical help for tinnitus difficulties. Our tinnitus counselling provides the base for other bespoke approaches we might use.

What Do We Do In Tinnitus Counselling?

Counselling

Counselling specifically refers to getting support and care from someone who is familiar with problematic tinnitus and what is involved in tinnitus reprocessing therapy journey.

Psychoeducation

Psychoeducation in relation to tinnitus difficulties refers to getting insight into the problem you have and what can be done about it. We draw on psychotherapeutic concepts, mind and body function in relation to problematic tinnitus. What helps and what makes things worse? Help with sleep. Self empowerment and practical help.

Cognitive behavioural therapy

Understand and challenge the way you think about your tinnitus experience and improve your relationship with tinnitus to help neutralise a tinnitus trigger.

MBSR

Mindfulness based stress reduction can help you to change your relationship with tinnitus by reducing the stress it might cause and helping you to meet the present moment with acceptance.

Body based therapy

Somatic based therapy includes a number of approaches and practical interventions. Examples include: trauma release exercises, tapping and breath-work.

Referral

We also discuss what options you have an d what therapeutic techniques we offer can help you. If we do not offer the treatment or therapy you need we will signpost or referr you to someone who can help. e.g. EMDR therapy.

Do you experience the following symptoms?

  • Inability to relax
  • Feelings of anxiety when you hear your tinnitus?
  • Do you become fixated on the tinnitus and struggle to think about anything else?
  • Do you get stuck in a negative tinnitus cycle?

If you experience these symptoms tinnitus counselling could help. You might also experience difficulties associated with problematic tinnitus.  These include PTSD, anxiety and depression. I also help with these difficulties at The Trauma Practice.
